Smart Square Is Joining 'symplr Time and Scheduling': What the October 2026 Launch Means for Staff
On 26 October 2026, symplr — the company that bought Smart Square in 2025 — launched a new combined product called "symplr Time and Scheduling", with Smart Square's scheduling inside it. If headlines about AI scheduling have you wondering whether your login, your app or your rota is about to change, here is what was actually announced, and what it does and does not mean for staff.
What symplr launched
symplr Time and Scheduling unites two products that were previously separate: the predictive nurse and staff scheduling of symplr Smart Square — the system this site's guides are about, and a "Best in KLAS" winner for scheduling — and symplr's healthcare timekeeping solution. In symplr's own description, the combined platform includes:
- Predictive scheduling — building schedules from expected demand rather than only filling gaps as they appear;
- Enterprise visibility — a view of available staff across units and facilities, not just one ward;
- Patented open shift management — the open-shift machinery Smart Square is already known for;
- Timekeeping that automates healthcare pay rules — the complex differentials, overtime and premium rules that make hospital payroll different from ordinary payroll.
symplr presented the product publicly days after the announcement, at the ANCC Magnet Conference in Chicago on 29–31 October 2026. This is the next chapter of the story we traced in Who Owns Smart Square? — Avantas to AMN Healthcare to symplr, and now from a scheduling product into a combined time-and-scheduling platform.
What the AI does — and what it doesn't
"AI-powered" does a lot of work in the announcement's headline, so it is worth being precise. The AI feature available now is schedule balancing: it reviews staffing needs, staff preferences, scheduling rules and past patterns, and then recommends adjustments — for a manager to approve. It does not silently rewrite your schedule, and it does not remove the manager from the decision.
The further AI features symplr describes — help with timecard corrections and with configuring scheduling rules — are planned for 2027. That is a roadmap, not something any hospital is using today, and any article that presents them as current features is getting ahead of the announcement.
Why symplr says it matters (their numbers, not ours)
The case symplr makes rests on figures the company reports itself, and they should be read that way. According to symplr, nurse managers can spend 5–7 hours a day building schedules by hand, and its 2026 Compass Survey found 41% of workforce scheduling is still fully manual. The company says the platform is designed to cut the time spent on staffing and timecard tasks by roughly half, and to free up to 75% of payroll-team capacity. Those are a vendor's claims about its own product — plausible motivation for the launch, but not independently verified results, and no hospital's mileage is guaranteed to match.
What this means for your login: nothing, yet
Here is the part that matters to everyone who uses our guides. Nothing in the announcement says that staff at any hospital will log in differently. There is no new portal address, no replacement app, and no statement that the Smart Square name is being retired for the staff who use it. Rollout of a platform like this happens employer by employer, on each health system's own timetable — and symplr's announcement gives no dates for any specific hospital.
So the practical guidance is boring, and that is good news: keep using your employer's Smart Square portal and the Smart Square Go app exactly as you do now, until your own organisation tells you something is changing. If a website claims HMH — or any other hospital — has already switched its staff login because of this launch, treat it the way you would any unverified claim: check your employer's own channels.
Frequently asked questions
Is Smart Square changing its name to symplr Time and Scheduling?
symplr's October 2026 launch positions Smart Square's scheduling inside a combined product called symplr Time and Scheduling, which also includes symplr's timekeeping. Nothing in the announcement says the staff-facing name, app or login is being replaced.
Do I need a new login or a new app after this launch?
No. The announcement includes no new portal address and no replacement app. Keep using your employer's Smart Square portal and the Smart Square Go app until your own organisation announces a change.
Will AI be making my schedule now?
No. The AI available now reviews staffing needs, preferences, rules and history, then recommends schedule adjustments for a manager to approve. The manager still makes the decision; further AI features are described by symplr as coming in 2027.
When will my hospital move to symplr Time and Scheduling?
There is no public date for any specific hospital. Rollout is decided employer by employer, so watch your own organisation's internal announcements rather than vendor news.
