New HMH Employee? Your First Smart Square Login
Welcome to Hackensack Meridian Health. Before your first shift you will need Smart Square — and the first thing to know is the thing that confuses every new starter: you do not create a Smart Square account. HMH IT creates it for you. This guide covers what you should have received, your first login, and what to do if your details never arrived.
Before your first login: the checklist
- Your HMH Network ID — issued by HMH IT, usually via your manager or onboarding paperwork. This is your username for Smart Square.
- Your password — an initial one you will sign in with first; the system may ask you to work through HMH's standard first-sign-in steps.
- Duo — HMH uses Duo for two-step verification. Have your phone ready; first login is when most people meet it.
- Your start details — unit, manager's name, first shifts. If none of this has reached you, that is a manager/IT question, not a Smart Square problem.
There is no self sign-up anywhere in this process — any website offering to “create” you a Smart Square account is not real. Accounts only come from HMH IT.
Your first login, step by step
- Go to the official portal, meridian.smart-square.com (bookmark the address our login guide links to).
- Choose Continue to SmartSquare.
- Enter your Network ID and password — the ID, not your email address.
- Complete the Duo step when prompted.
- You land on your Smart Square home view. That is it — you are in.
Then set up the app (do it on day one)
Install Smart Square Go, enter meridian.smart-square.com as the organisation URL, and sign in with the same Network ID. Our app setup guide walks through it. Doing this on day one — not the morning of a shift you are unsure about — is the difference between a calm start and a 5am phone call.
Your schedule looks empty?
Normal for new starters. Either your department has not published the rota covering your start date yet, or your shifts begin in the next period. Our schedule guide explains how to check — and if the dates around your start stay blank, ask your manager rather than assuming you are not rostered.
Day-one problems? Read this before panicking
- No Network ID or password yet: ask your manager or HMH IT — only they can issue it. Support can help on 732-776-4442, Monday–Friday 7am–5pm.
- Login rejected: check you typed the Network ID (not email) and picked Continue to SmartSquare; our login fixes cover the rest.
- Never sign in as someone else. A colleague offering their login “just so you can check the rota” is a security problem, not a favour. Wait for your own details — they are coming.

Frequently asked questions
How do I create a Smart Square account as a new HMH employee?
You don't — HMH IT creates accounts for staff; there is no self sign-up. Your Network ID and first password come via your manager or onboarding. If they have not arrived, ask your manager or HMH IT.
What do I need for my first Smart Square login?
Your HMH Network ID, your password, and your phone for the Duo verification step. Sign in at meridian.smart-square.com via Continue to SmartSquare.
Can I use my email address to sign in?
No — Smart Square uses your Network ID, not your email. Typing your email is the most common first-login mistake.
I started this week and my schedule is empty — am I rostered?
Probably, yes: new starters often begin in a period whose rota is not published yet, so dates look blank. Check again closer to your start, and ask your manager if the dates around your start stay empty.
My login details never arrived — who do I contact?
Your manager or HMH IT first, since only they can issue your account. HMH support can also help on 732-776-4442, Monday to Friday 7am-5pm. Never borrow a colleague's login in the meantime.
