What Is Smart Square HMH? The Scheduling System, Explained

Hospital scheduling office running Smart Square

“Smart Square HMH” is not a separate product — it is Smart Square, the hospital staff-scheduling system, as used by Hackensack Meridian Health. This page explains what the system is, who owns it, what the HMH part means, and — because the internet is full of confident nonsense about it — what is not true.

What Smart Square does

Smart Square is scheduling software built for hospitals and health systems. A department's rota lives inside it: managers build and publish the schedule, and team members sign in to view their shifts, pick up open ones, swap with colleagues and request time off. It replaces the spreadsheet-and-phone-call way of running a rota — which, in a hospital that never closes, breaks down fast. The mobile companion is Smart Square Go, the current app, which puts the same schedule on a phone.

Who owns Smart Square?

The short history, because the ownership explains the branding you will see:

You will still see older names in old screenshots and outdated guides. The current owner is symplr.

The “HMH” part

Hackensack Meridian Health is one of New Jersey's largest health networks — 18 hospitals, more than 500 locations and over 36,000 team members — and it runs its staff scheduling on Smart Square. HMH's door into the system is its own portal at meridian.smart-square.com, and access is provisioned by HMH IT: staff sign in with an HMH Network ID, there is no public registration. HMH is one of many health systems using Smart Square; each has its own portal address, which is why guides for other hospitals will not match yours.
