Who Owns Smart Square? The Avantas → AMN → symplr Story
If you have used Smart Square for years, you have watched the names around it change: an Avantas product, then an AMN one, now a symplr one. Colleagues ask whether the system was “sold again”, whether their login is about to change, whether the app with the new publisher name is a fake. This is the actual story — three owners, one system, and what each change did and did not mean for the staff who sign in every day.
Act one: Avantas builds it
Smart Square began at Avantas, a company focused on healthcare workforce technology — the unglamorous, essential problem of matching thousands of staff to thousands of shifts without burning out either the staff or the budget. Smart Square was its scheduling platform, designed for hospitals rather than adapted from retail or office software, and it spread through health systems that needed exactly that.
Act two: AMN Healthcare buys in (2014)
In December 2014, AMN Healthcare — one of the largest healthcare staffing companies in the US — acquired Avantas. The logic was plain: AMN placed healthcare workers for a living; owning the software that scheduled them was a natural fit. For hospital staff, almost nothing visible changed at first. Over the following decade, “an AMN Healthcare company” became the line under the Smart Square name, and the system kept running through it all — same logins, same schedules, same 5am shift checks.
Act three: symplr takes over (2025)
On 2 July 2025, symplr — a company that builds operations software for healthcare (the systems behind the systems: workforce, compliance, supply chain) — announced it was acquiring Smart Square from AMN, in a deal reported at $75 million. Smart Square moved to an owner whose entire business is hospital software. With the move came the visible tidy-up staff actually noticed: the app's publisher name became symplr, and Smart Square Go stands as the current app under the new owner.
What changed for you — and what didn't
- Changed: the owner, the publisher name on the app, the branding around the edges.
- Did not change: your portal (meridian.smart-square.com for HMH), your Network ID, your password, your schedule, or how your department runs its rota. Ownership moved offices; your login never noticed.
- The real risk was never the sale — it is the confusion. Every rebrand leaves old screenshots, dead apps and outdated guides behind, and clone sites multiply them. When an app listing looks unfamiliar, check the publisher: today it should say symplr.
Three owners in a decade sounds unstable until you see the pattern: each buyer wanted the same thing — the system hospitals already trusted with their rotas. The names on the door keep changing. The schedule on the other side of it has not missed a shift yet.

Frequently asked questions
Who owns Smart Square now?
symplr, which acquired the business from AMN Healthcare in a deal announced on 2 July 2025, reported at $75 million.
Did the symplr acquisition change my Smart Square login?
No. Your portal, Network ID, password and schedule were unaffected. What changed was ownership and branding — including the app publisher name becoming symplr.
Why does my app mention Avantas or AMN?
Leftover branding from earlier owners: Avantas created Smart Square and AMN Healthcare owned it from December 2014 to 2025. The current app, Smart Square Go, is published by symplr.
Is Smart Square Go published by symplr the real app?
Yes. Smart Square Go by symplr is the current, official app. Older apps under previous owners' names are retired — do not sign in through them.
